Estonia
Unbelievable value for a city with something to suit every taste!
There are few places in Europe where the aura of the 14th and 15th centuries survives intact the way it does in Tallinn's Old Town, a jumble of medieval walls and turrets, needling spires and winding, cobbled streets. Tallinn has good facilities for most sports and leisure activities, although football is the main sport.
Pre-war Tallinn, they say, never slept, not even in winter. After the blip of the Soviet era, that is pretty much the case again, and the city is a paradise for 24-hour party people. By western standards, admission and drinks are a bargain, and Tallinn is compact and easily navigable. The introverted Estonians seem to lose their reserve when it comes to a night out; although most venues attract an up-for-it, unpretentious crowd. Visitors are often surprised that a city as small as Tallinn has such a variety of after-hours entertainment to offer. There’s something to suit every taste, from the quiet sophistication of a cigar lounge to the raucous mania of a packed nightclub.
Tallinn is packed with eateries serving everything from hearty German-influenced Estonian dishes to fine French cuisine with a local twist. The restaurant scene has developed pretty much from scratch in the past 15 years and establishments come and go. Dining in Tallinn is usually cheap and, at its best, it offers unbelievable value for money.
